Many of the remains were recovered from cave tombs on the tell slope that would fill up with water and debris every rainy season. Calcium carbonate salts and other minerals would have been transported from the surrounding sediment and precipitated on the bone surface, eventually causing many of them to mineralize over the millennia (Lyman 1994: 420).
