Less-volatile materials could condense into solids relatively close to the Sun to form the terrestrial planets. Gaia is a space observatory of the European Space Agency (ESA) designed for astrometry. The planets were confirmed and characterized by a suite of ground-based telescopes, including four telescopes on Maunakea.
